Ecuador as an Exotic Coffee Origin

QC and Buying Stations

Ecuador has traditionally been known for producing beans destined for instant coffee, grown on large plantations.

However, demographic shifts have yielded a dramatic transition, and now many small-scale, quality-focused producers are forging a new reputation for their country: a source of sought-after specialty coffee that’s as idiosyncratic as it is scarce.

Coffee came to Ecuador in the early 19th century. As in many other origins, small-scale farmers have happened upon specialty coffee as a way to make their livelihood more sustai-nable, and with an increased demand for a high-quality product, many producers have been able to use the profits from much higher specialty prices to invest in their farms. We began working in Ecuador in 2007 but it wasn’t until 2014 that we opened our own exporting operation there. Between dollari-zed economy and the quality of their coffee, Ecuador’s exports are among the most expensive we offer, but they are worth it.
