El Cacique

STORY

In the southern department of Cusco in Peru, travelling towards the east, you’ll find the province of Calca. It is in the limits of the Sierra with the amazon jungle, and as such influen- ced by the climatic conditions creating ideal conditions for coffee and a vast biodiversity. One of the common birds found in this area where coffee is produced, is El Cacique, called in quechua P’usti. It is identified by its color mix of black and yellow, building its nests in the form of pendulum in isolated parts or near people to avoid being sacked by monkeys. It is a very distinct bird of the region, and normally it can be seen in the coffe farms, hence the name of this brand.

Caravela’s team of PECA technicians has been working with the producers from Calca since 2020 and already starting to see changes such as in infrastructure and the quality of the coffee. These producers are committed to invest in their farms, improve their quality of life, and develop a sustainable way of life. El Cacique is an acknowledgment to their hard work and showcasing it.
