La Guerrera

Group of small-scale female producers from Chiquimula
STORY

Although it is more common to think of a Guatemalan coffee producer as a male figure, we do sometimes find women managing their own farms and sustaining their families through coffee production. These women work very hard, striving to produce a high-quality product to improve their incomes and offer their families and children a better quality of life. These coffees deserve to be known internationally and these producers deserve to receive the recognition for their hard work. For this reason, the coffee La Guerrera was created. A Guerrera is a warrior, a strong woman who never gives up, and this is what represents coffee producing women in Guatemala.

In the Mayan culture, the denomination of Kalomt was the maximum position of a leader and it means “superior warrior.” Each one of these dedicated female coffee producers is the Kalomt, the superior warriors of their own farms.
