There is still no certainty as to how the first coffee seeds entered Mexico, but what we have known for sure, is that after these seeds arrived, coffee quickly found a foothold as plantations spread across the country. Over the last two decades, there has been an expansion of coffee culture in Mexico, not only in terms of production, but also consumption. Today, coffee represents about 50% of the agricultural exports from the country, with specialty coffee exports facing increasing competition from the internal market.

Mexico produces coffee in 12 states, mainly in the south. The boom in specialty coffee production in Mexico over the last decade has seen more small and medium scale producers to get involved with the production of these types of coffees through better farm maintenance and deeper understanding of best harvest and post-harvest practices. Coffee was initially highly regarded in Mexico, until the revolution took hold and coffee plantations were left to deteriorate. After the revolution ended, large tracts of land that belonged to the Mexican elite began to be broken up and farmed by small scale producers.

Over time this has resulted in a culture of smallholder farming which rivals that of Colombia, with more than 300,000 coffee producers.
