FINCA LLANO CARRIZAL STORY

Francisca grew up surrounded by coffee. She remembers that this was the only source of income they had. Since she was little, her brother has cared for her since they lost their parents. So, for more than 30 years, she has been involved in coffee farming. “Coffee supported us economically, not much because the price was low, but we didn’t get discouraged and continue planting until now. We used to sell coffee at lower prices; now, thanks to Caravela, we see a big difference.”

Her parents inherited the farm, and each sibling got a piece of the land. Today her farm Llano Naranja is well-managed and produces excellent coffees. Three years ago, she began to focus on selling specialty coffees. Thus, Francisca is motivated to produce specialty coffee because of the dedication that goes into coffee; at the same time, she can now receive a better income and sees that her commitment is rewarded. Francisca works with her husband on her farm, and sometimes her children help her on their time off, as they moved to Mexico City in search of other and better opportunities.

When processing her coffees, Francisca ensures that the coffee cherries are well selected and that the coffee is fermented for 24 to 72 hours, depending on the temperature and climate. After the coffee is pulped, it’s dried on concrete terraces. She says that her farm is 100% planted with the Typica variety. She hopes to grow, mainly to conserve the Typica variety and increase production.

Francisca also sends a special message to all customers who prefer her coffee: “Thank you for preferring my coffee among so many producers in Oaxaca. I hope you enjoy it because we process it with much love and dedication”.
