Valentin Machacca Mayta

FINCA WAYNAPATA STORY

In the mountainous district of Calca in the southern part of Peru, Valentin Machacca lives with his wife, Sulma Quispe, at their farm, Waynapata. This farm was originally his father’s, which he inherited. Valentin began producing coffee in 2013 and recently got into specialty coffee in 2021. His biggest motivation was to get a better price for good quality coffee. Over the past couple of years, the accompaniment and advice of the PECA technician have been key to improving the quality of his production. It has been quite a learning curve for him, during which he learned things such as identifying which varieties are better suited for achieving better cup qualities. The work on the farm has been a family effort, with his wife and children helping him with some of the farm’s aspects. Valentin is proud of what he has been able to achieve and recalls how some of his neighbors have admired his healthy plants. As it is a continuing process, he wants to install a solar dryer to improve qualities and experiment with anaerobic fermentations. Valentin is someone eager to learn more and continue on this path in specialty coffee, and he invites you to get to know his farm and the effort required to produce this coffee.
